Case study: helping George Martorano escape from prison

George Martorano

Blogging is one of the best marketing tools. Over almost two decades I coached more than hundred people to blog. Our goal was not that they are bloggers but that they are valuable to their audience. I worked with artists, elite athletes, managers, entrepreneurs, politicians, people starting something, people who already made their mark, people from every part of the world. Sometimes it was difficult to start, but those who persisted benefited.

One of favorite clients was George Martorano.

George was one the first in USA to be sentenced to life for a non-violent crime. He was still in his twenties when he went to prison. I met him when he was in his fifties serving his third decade. I immediately wanted to help him. I am a believer in rehabilitation and George was a great opportunity for me to take symbolic action.

In 2007 I sent a letter to George offering my pro-bono services. I told him he should blog. He agreed. He was not allowed to use a computer so he mailed his blog posts as hand written letters to his friend, John, who published them for him. We used He kept a steady pace from 2007 until 2015.

The blog was not pretty but it worked. George was released from his life sentence on 5 October 2015. One of the factors in his release was his blogging. The parole board saw him as someone who wants to help and share. Almost a decade of blogging was impossible to fake.

I am proud to have been part of George’s path to freedom. George fought against all odds and always found a way to do the the most with what he was given. Ten years of blogging from a prison only with letters shows his incredible focus and dedication. He is a great example of what a person can do. Thank you George.
